Researchers adapt in face of pandemic
The shift to online in March didn’t just affect classroom instruction or student activities. Faculty research – much of which involves community partners, human subjects, labwork, focus groups, and interviews – also shifted in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

PROFESSOR’S SCHOLARSHIP AIMS TO ADDRESS EQUITY AND INCLUSION IN HHS
For Crystal Dixon, diversity and inclusion cannot exist without equity. In 2019, she was appointed by the dean as chair of HHS’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee – her first task? Including the word “equity” in the title. She wanted to ensure the committee was embracing the concept of equity in their efforts.

UNCG PROFESSOR WORKS WITH WHO TO IMPROVE SEXUAL HEALTH
Survey instruments–questionnaires that are used to collect information on a respondent–are vital to public health research. Many survey instruments on sexual and reproductive health have been developed for use in high-income countries, and oftentimes these tools are too specific to be used across various countries and contexts, limiting the ability to make cross-country comparisons.

PROFESSOR AWARDED $100,000 GATES FOUNDATION GRANT
Dr. Jocelyn R. Smith Lee has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for her project “Disrupting Dehumanizing Narratives of Black Men in Poverty.” Smith Lee is one of just 28 grantees across the nation to be selected as part of the Gates Foundation’s Voices for Economic Opportunity Grand Challenge.

ED.D. IN KINESIOLOGY Virtual Defenses ‘UNFORGETTABLE’
Dr. Amanda Durall never imagined that she would complete her doctorate in the backseat of her minivan in the middle of a global pandemic. She had twin girls in January 2020 and finished her online EdD in kinesiology dissertation while on bedrest and in between countless trips to the neonatal intensive care unit.
